Jayapura, Jubi – The central government, in coordination with the Papua Provincial Government, is accelerating efforts to upgrade slum areas in Jayapura, with implementation targeted to begin in May 2026. The plan was discussed during a special meeting between central government representatives and Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri in Jayapura on Wednesday (April 8, 2026).
Head of the Papua I Housing and Settlement Provision Implementation Center, Desyarmeda Killian, said the discussion focused on two main agendas. The first concerns the planned visit of the Minister of Housing to Papua in the near future.
“The visit agenda includes launching the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) program, directly reviewing slum areas, and socializing housing programs to the public,” she said.
In addition, the government reviewed plans to upgrade slum areas across four locations in Jayapura—Tanjung Ria, Imbi, Mandala, and Argapura—covering a total of approximately 22.5 hectares. These areas were officially designated through a mayoral decree in 2025.
However, the acceleration effort still faces administrative and technical challenges. Key documents such as the Detail Engineering Design (DED), planning drawings, and cost estimates (RAB) have not yet been fully completed.
“The technical documents still need to be completed so that implementation is not delayed. We hope for support from the provincial government to speed up the process,” she said.
The central government has set a target for all required documents to be finalized by April 2026, allowing physical work to commence the following month.
The upgrading program will be based on seven main indicators, including improvements to neighborhood roads, waste management, drainage, access to clean water, provision of green open spaces, fire protection systems, and sanitation.
The BSPS program will also be integrated to support low-income residents in the affected areas.
The central government has pledged full support for the initiative, including the possibility of relocating residents if necessary as part of a comprehensive restructuring of slum areas in Jayapura. (*)
